Milica spent about two months on the island of Mallorca—and here’s how she tells the story.
Where do I even begin? How do you squeeze a whole little world into just a few sentences… My Spanish adventure started with a simple desire: to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina. It had begun to feel too small, too heavy. The destination sort of chose itself—I was craving something exotic, and Spain, especially an island in Spain, sounded just right. The paperwork and choosing a host family took around two months. That’s the time when you really need to think about what kind of lifestyle suits you and which type of family you’d feel best with. Once all of that was sorted, it was time to pack and take off.
Like all new beginnings, it wasn’t easy. That’s when the real change starts—adjusting your habits, learning to respect someone else’s space and time. It also takes a little while for the kids to warm up to you, to really get to know you—especially if, like me, you don’t speak their native language. But you get through it, especially with the thought in the back of your mind that you’re lucky to even be in such a place. I had plenty of time for myself—I’d often go to the beach, explore new places every weekend, and meet other girls from all around the world. It truly felt like I was discovering the whole world from one spot. Over time, you find your people—those who are most like you. And if you’re really lucky, maybe you even meet someone special. Haha. In the end, you walk away with a beautiful story, complete with a happy ending.
Saying goodbye is hard, of course, but that too passes. And what you’re left with is another family you’ll remember forever, along with so many amazing friends.
There’s so much I couldn’t fit into this little note—but that’s even better, because it means you still have the chance to live your own version of this story. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Center for Affirmation and Development for guiding me through it all. They really are there for you every step of the way, whenever you need support.
“Be scared, but do it anyway”—that’s the quote I carried with me.
Thank you to everyone who made this journey unforgettable.
