A Journey Through Culture and Tradition – Cultural Exchange in China

Un viaggio attraverso la cultura e la tradizione - Scambio culturale in Cina

Our cultural exchange participant Elia is writing to us from faraway Beijing, where she’s been living for two months now. Read on to discover her first impressions and unforgettable experiences.

Hello everyone! I want to share my positive experience with the Center for Affirmation and Development, which made this amazing opportunity in China possible. It’s been two months since I arrived in Beijing, and from the very first day, my host family welcomed me with incredible hospitality and care, making sure I felt comfortable and at home. Honestly, they’ve made me feel like part of their family.

Soon after I arrived, we traveled together to Sichuan province, where we visited some of the region’s most famous tourist spots. I also got to celebrate the New Year with them, which was such a beautiful and meaningful experience.

Beijing, where I’m currently living, is a fascinating city bursting with history. It offers a truly unique mix of fast-paced modern life and rich traditions. I love the energy of the city, the incredible food, and all the opportunities to explore—whether it’s ancient temples, museums, galleries, or iconic landmarks like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Beijing is constantly buzzing with life, and the people here are warm and welcoming.

Elia also shared what she enjoys the most and how she spends her free time:

What I’ve loved the most is the chance to connect with people from a completely different culture—to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn about Chinese traditions and customs. The program has given me a much deeper understanding of global perspectives, and I’ve especially enjoyed the cultural outings.

In my free time, I dive into the city’s vibrant art scene and visit museums to discover new exhibitions. I love strolling through the city’s neighborhoods—from the historic hutongs to the more modern districts—sampling all kinds of traditional Chinese food along the way. Biking is my favorite way to get around, and I find so much inspiration during walks in the park or visits to temples and other cultural landmarks.

Public transport here is super affordable and very well-connected, so getting around is easy. I also spend part of my free time learning the Chinese language, and sometimes I just enjoy relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee, taking in the everyday life that surrounds me.

When it comes to her collaboration with the program team, Elia adds:

This exchange has been incredibly well-organized, and the team at the Center has always been there for me with advice, support, and all the information I needed to adjust smoothly. I want to give a special shoutout to Jelena, who guided me through every step of the way—from creating my profile and preparing for the host family search to the visa process, booking flights, and finally making the trip. Her support made everything easier and helped me feel fully prepared.

To future candidates, she says:

Based on my experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend the cultural exchange program organized by the Center for Affirmation and Development. It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to broaden their horizons, learn new skills, and immerse themselves in a truly unique cultural adventure.

My advice to future participants? Choose your host family carefully—ask all the important questions during your interview to make sure it’s a good match. Take the time to research your future city and its surroundings before arriving. And definitely install key apps like WeChat, Alipay, a good translator, and a VPN—these tools are essential for daily life in China. With the right prep, you’ll adjust more easily and fully enjoy everything this incredible experience has to offer.
