Milica, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from Beijing Shangdong, where she’s been warmly welcomed into a new culture and a new home. Read more about her exciting journey below:

I couldn’t be happier—I truly feel at home here. The children and the whole family greeted me so kindly and made me feel completely accepted. From the moment I arrived, there was no sense of distance between us.

Of course, I’ve encountered some cultural differences and unfamiliar ways of doing things, but that’s also what opened my eyes to how wonderfully diverse people can be. The city itself is beautiful—every corner holds something interesting and charming that draws you in and makes you want to explore more. One street might be filled with luxurious buildings and high-end shops, while the next takes you into authentic, traditional Chinese neighborhoods that feel like stepping into a story.

The program has also given me the perfect opportunity to improve my Chinese. Being constantly surrounded by the language—both in daily conversation and through lessons—has helped so much. I’m amazed every day by how friendly and welcoming the people here are. Their reactions when they see a foreigner speaking Chinese are priceless—they’re always so excited and supportive.

Milica also shared how she spends her time and what stood out to her the most:

I try to explore as much as I can, really getting to know the city and the culture. I also spend a lot of meaningful time with my host family, which is something I truly value. Besides visiting the major landmarks, I love wandering through the smaller, hidden streets—there’s always something new to discover.

What I love most is the way Chinese people function as a community—their relaxed approach to life, how they spend time together as families, and just the general sense of togetherness. Everything I’ve seen and experienced so far has been incredible, and I’m genuinely excited for what’s still to come.
