Follow Your Dreams

Want to learn more about China’s vibrant Guangdong province? Let Milena, a participant in the Cultural Exchange Program, take you on a journey through her unforgettable experience:

Every journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step—or in my case, with the decision to follow a dream. That’s how, just a few months ago, my adventure in China began.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the endless warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people. I was surprised to find how much we actually have in common—shared customs, a love for family, and a deep-rooted sense of community. That said, I quickly learned that superstition runs deep in everyday life here!

Let’s talk food. In Guangdong province, it’s not just a meal—it’s a way of life. People will drive two hours just to get to a restaurant that’s known for serving something delicious. And while there’s a running joke that locals here eat everything except airplanes and tables, I have to say: the food is incredible. Honestly, it was the thing I worried about most before coming, and now it’s the thing I’ll miss the most.

The host family I live with is lovely—modern, open-minded, and genuinely kind. From the start, they’ve treated me as one of their own. The little girl I care for is sharp and full of life, and her mother has become a close friend.

Foshan, my current city, is well-developed and famous for its ceramics and furniture. I also took language classes in Guangzhou, which I found even more exciting. Since arriving, I’ve managed to visit Hong Kong, Macau, Hope Island (Zhuhai), and even Inner Mongolia. Comparing the north and south of China feels like comparing two completely different countries. In fact, China itself feels like a world of its own.

Now that my program is ending, I’ve decided to travel a bit more—Beijing is next on my list.

It’s hard to put into words just how deeply I’ve fallen in love with this country. What I can say is this: I know I’ll be coming back many times again.
