Friendships, Learning, and New Discoveries – Cultural Exchange in Spain

Sara, one of our cultural exchange participants, is currently enjoying her stay in the town of Campo de Criptana, just outside Madrid. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:

My impressions are honestly wonderful. Campo de Criptana is a small and peaceful town, and above all, it feels incredibly safe. The extended family lives nearby, so I’ve had the chance to meet them all and spend time with them, which helped me experience the full warmth of Spanish family life. Alba and Alberto, the parents of the two adorable girls I take care of, have been so generous and welcoming from the moment I arrived. They helped me with everything I needed and made me feel so at home that I almost forgot to miss my own family and friends!

On my days off, I usually travel, and during the week, I fill my free time with different activities. Alberto introduced me to his cousin Sandra, who’s the same age as me, and we immediately hit it off. I go to the gym with her or take walks around town. Since it’s gotten quite warm lately, I’ve been swimming, reading, and drawing a lot. I also make sure to set aside time every day to study Spanish! What impressed me most was how warmly the family welcomed me and how much effort they put into helping me enjoy my time here, especially when it comes to planning trips.

As for the team at the Center, I really couldn’t be happier. They’ve been incredibly kind and supportive from the very beginning of the program. Their help meant a lot to me, not just during the application process but also once I arrived in Spain and began adjusting. They’ve been hardworking, professional, and above all, genuinely kind. I have nothing but praise!

To anyone considering this program, she says:

Go for it! This is the kind of unforgettable experience that stays with you for life. Getting to know a new culture, different customs, and amazing people—it’s something completely different from just visiting a place as a tourist. I truly believe it’s important and fulfilling to live with a local family. One more thing: don’t make your decision based only on the location! I’d always dreamed of going to Barcelona and even had an offer from a family there, but in the end, I chose Madrid because I felt a stronger connection with the family, and I can honestly say, I have no regrets.
