Living the Island Dream on Mallorca

Iva spent a month and a half soaking up the sun and culture on beautiful Mallorca as part of a cultural exchange program in Spain. Now that her journey has come to an end, she reflects on the experience as one that exceeded every expectation she had.

From the start, I felt welcomed and understood by my host family, which made all the difference. A cultural exchange is a two-way street—what we give as participants should be equally met by what we receive from the family. And Palma? I was charmed! I fell in love with its winding streets, the scent of freshly baked ensaimadas drifting from local bakeries, and the warm, cheerful energy of people greeting each other with a simple Hola…

What stood out to Iva the most was getting a taste of the local lifestyle—something far richer than a tourist experience. Her strong connection with her host family meant most of her free time was spent with them.

Almost every day, we explored different parts of Palma and other towns on the island. We tried traditional food together, and before I knew it, I felt like a local. Mallorca is full of stunning beaches, which became our go-to place for relaxing and spending quality time together. The program also gave me the chance to meet other exchange participants on the island—I became close with a few girls who are now true friends I can’t wait to see again back home.

During her stay, Iva checked off some iconic must-sees: the capital city Palma, the charming town of Sóller, the magical Dragon Caves (Cuevas del Drach), and one of the island’s most breathtaking beaches, Cala Varques. While her days were often full of adventure, she also made time to slow down and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of island life.
