Milica has been living in Palermo for two months now, the capital of Sicily—Italy’s largest island and the heart of the Mediterranean. Read more about her experience below.
This program is truly amazing. It offers an incredible opportunity to get to know a country that interests you, and even more importantly, to dive deep into its culture and meet its people most beautifully. You get plenty of free time and only a few responsibilities once you arrive at your chosen destination. The most important thing is to choose a family that feels like the right fit—one you connect with and want to spend time with. I was really lucky to end up with a wonderful family who welcomed me with open arms and were eager to show me their city, the lifestyle of locals, and the dynamics of their own family life.
Palermo is incredible—a movie-like city that’s always alive. Day or night, you’ll run into locals on the streets who can’t wait to meet you and share the magic of Palermo with you. If I had to choose a city in Italy all over again, I would still pick Palermo.
I spend my free time exploring the city and checking out nearby places that are also popular with tourists. Since I’m by the sea, I often head to the beach as well. I’m free every day until 3 p.m., so I usually take a walk through the city, stop by my favorite little bakery, and try something new—because Palermo offers so many delicious things we don’t have back home in the Balkans.
What I love most about the program is the freedom it gives you. You never really feel like you have strict obligations—your time with the child flies by and it’s fun. After a few hours, you’re free to go wherever you want and do whatever you like. This program is truly ideal if you want to experience a country in the most genuine and enriching way.
If you’re thinking about applying—do it! It’s a great way to spend meaningful time in the destination of your choice. One of the biggest advantages is being with a family that wants to show you all the beauty and variety this place has to offer. You won’t feel lonely, the time will fly by, and you’ll also learn how to be independent and enjoy your own company.
