Summer in One of the Biggest and Most Exciting Cities in the World – Cultural Exchange in Shanghai

Zorana, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, is wrapping up her first month in Shanghai—and she’s got plenty to share about her whirlwind summer in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

When I applied for this program last December, it was more of a spontaneous decision. I never imagined that I’d end up spending my summer in one of the largest and most exciting cities on the planet. No article or documentary I found online could’ve truly prepared me for what Shanghai is really like.

Let’s start with the people.
I’ve been incredibly lucky—my host family is extremely kind and makes an effort to communicate with me however they can, even though they don’t speak English. And with China being the most populous country in the world, you’ll meet hundreds of different personalities on the streets—especially on the metro, where the concept of personal space simply doesn’t exist. Still, people are usually willing to help you, even if you don’t ask. Sometimes, they’ll spot your confused face and step in before you say a word!

Before I came to China, I was already a huge fan of Chinese food… now I’m completely obsessed.
What’s served as “Asian cuisine” back home doesn’t even come close to what I’ve tasted here. From all kinds of fish (most of which I’ve stopped trying to remember the names of), to exotic vegetables, spices, and seafood you cook yourself at the table, it’s an adventure every time. And don’t even get me started on the fruit—some of it smells awful but tastes incredible.

Just a heads-up: if you ask for a glass of water, don’t be surprised if they bring it warm. And if you’re craving yogurt, be prepared to find only cheddar cheese-flavored ones at the supermarket!

With the help of my host family and new friends, I’ve already discovered a small slice of this incredible city and its culture in just three weeks. And since I plan to stay much longer, I’m genuinely excited for what’s still to come.

This is a one-of-a-kind experience—and I recommend it too absolutely everyone.
