Madrid – A City of Diversity, Alive Day and Night

Zrinka, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, writes to us from Madrid, where she’s been living for almost a month. Here’s what she had to share about her experience so far.

The host family I’m staying with is incredibly kind and understanding, and they made me feel welcome from day one. Madrid is absolutely stunning – a city that never sleeps, full of energy, color, and endless things to see, taste, and experience. It’s huge, but the public transport is so well organized that getting around is easy.

My weekends are completely free. Before arriving, I thought I’d spend them traveling to nearby cities, but I’ve fallen so in love with Madrid that I actually prefer staying here. There’s always something happening – flamenco shows, museum visits, strolling through Retiro Park, or treasure hunting at El Rastro flea market. I’ve met so many amazing people – other girls from the program, Erasmus students, and locals – and we spend our days wandering through Madrid’s vibrant streets, parks, and cafés.

And when the sun goes down, we find a cozy bar or head to one of the city’s rooftops to watch the sunset and take in the nighttime skyline. Many hotels and bars offer free rooftop access, and the views are worth the climb.

Madrid is loud, bold, and beautifully diverse – and that’s exactly why I love it. But more than the city itself, what’s left the biggest impression on me are the people I’ve met here and the connections we’ve made so naturally.

During the week, I usually spend my free hours relaxing or having coffee with new friends. Besides Madrid, which I’ve explored thoroughly, I also took a day trip to Toledo. It’s a magical little city, quiet and charming, with ancient bridges and castles that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a different century.
