Madrid Is the Perfect City

Our cultural exchange participant Anđela, who is soon wrapping up her two-month stay, wrote to us from sunny Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain.

This whole experience has been amazing, and I’m so grateful I got the chance to spend some time in Spain. The program is excellent, and I’ve enjoyed staying with my host family who live on the outskirts of Madrid. They’re kind, thoughtful, and have made me feel welcome from day one. And the city itself? Perfect.

Madrid is one of those places that just buzzes with life. As the capital, it’s packed with cultural landmarks and endless things to do. I’ve been making the most of it—spending time with other au pairs who are here with their own host families, exploring the city together, but also taking solo walks and discovering hidden gems on my own.

What I’ve loved most is the opportunity to learn and improve my Spanish while immersing myself in the colorful and diverse local culture. This exchange has also given me the chance to meet new people and build friendships I wouldn’t have found otherwise.

If you’re thinking about applying for this program, my advice is to do your research, especially when it comes to the location and how far the family lives from the city center. Don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as you can before you arrive—about the family’s expectations, daily routine, and anything else that will help you feel prepared. The more you know in advance, the smoother your experience will be.
