Never Let Fear Hold You Back!

Dijana, a participant in the cultural exchange program, shares her reflections from Spain—and they’re full of gratitude, courage, and joy.

I first heard about CAR through a friend who spent last summer in Spain. Listening to her stories lit something in me, and I knew I had to apply. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Spain—I love the language and culture—but of course, I had my doubts. I wondered if I’d manage, if it was the right decision. Still, my gut and the excitement I felt wouldn’t let me back out. And I’m so glad I listened to that feeling, because it turns out this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I’ve been living in Manresa, a charming little town near Barcelona, for a month now. The family welcomed me with so much warmth, and we instantly clicked. The parents are kind, caring, and always make sure I feel supported. The two little girls, aged 3 and 6, accepted me from the very beginning—we’ve truly bonded, and I love spending time with them. The tasks I have during the day don’t feel like a burden at all. I’m able to plan them in a way that works for me, leaving plenty of time to explore, relax, and connect with others.

Manresa is lovely, and I’ve been blown away by how open, friendly, and warm the people are here. So far, I’ve visited Barcelona, Cardona, and Montserrat, and I’ve got a long list of places I still want to see. I also joined a language exchange at UPC University, where I’ve met so many wonderful people who are helping me practice both Spanish and English. I’m proud of how much I’ve learned—that was one of my biggest goals coming into this experience.

I’m also lucky to have a friend from Serbia here who’s also working as an au pair. We meet up regularly, talk about our experiences, and support each other. It means a lot to have that connection.

This whole journey has been unforgettable. I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and facing my fears. My confidence has grown, and I feel more fulfilled and happy in my skin than I have in a long time. I’m so grateful that programs like this exist, giving young people the chance to travel, learn about themselves, and build something beautiful.

A huge thank you to my coordinator, Ana, for all the support she gave me along the way. And to anyone reading this who’s unsure—don’t let fear get in your way. Step into the unknown. This kind of experience is truly something you have to live to understand.
