On the Smallest Canary Island – Cultural Exchange in Spain

Natalija, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, writes to us from Frontera, on the island of El Hierro, where she’s been living for about two months now. Here’s what she had to say about her one-of-a-kind experience:

Even before arriving in Spain, I was already excited about my host family—I couldn’t wait to meet them. From day one, we’ve gotten along like we’ve known each other for years. Working with the kids is easy—they’re incredibly well-behaved, polite, and fun to be around.

El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands, and it’s bursting with natural beauty, volcanoes, and stunning beaches that offer unforgettable views.

The weather is perfect, and the air always feels fresh. I usually spend my free time with the family—they’ve taken me all over the island to show me hidden spots and help me get to know this amazing place. There’s a strong South American influence here, especially in the local food. Nearly every restaurant serves dishes that come from Venezuela, and it’s all so different from what I’m used to. I’ve had the chance to try all sorts of new things and meet people from many different places.

I’ve grown close to the family, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to live with them and get to know them. I’d recommend this program to everyone—it’s truly an unforgettable experience and such a great way to step out of your comfort zone.

What I love most is spending time with the family, listening to their fun stories, and practicing Spanish with them. The kids are excited to speak English with me, and every moment we spend together feels special. I also love spending time at the beach, with the family and their friends.

Her message to future participants:

Make sure you choose your host family carefully—because that’s the most important part of the whole experience.
