Our cultural exchange participant in Spain, Danijela, is checking in from sunny Gijón, in the Asturias region, where she’s been enjoying life for almost three months now. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:
Getting there and settling in went super smoothly. The host family is incredibly kind and welcoming. From day one, they’ve made me feel like a part of their family. I really love Gijón – the city has gorgeous beaches, a pleasant climate, and a laid-back vibe. The people here are warm and friendly, which makes everything even better.
Danijela also shared how she likes to spend her free time and what she’s been loving the most:
In my spare time, I enjoy exploring Gijón and nearby towns. I often travel to different parts of Spain—and even to Portugal! I love outdoor activities like biking, skiing, walking along the coast, and checking out cool spots around the city. I also hang out with friends a lot—we go out, meet new people, and soak up the local atmosphere. I’m taking Spanish classes too, which really helps me integrate and connect with the people around me.
What I enjoy most is discovering new cultures, cities, and people. Traveling has brought me unforgettable experiences, and spending time with locals has made me feel right at home. I also really love learning Spanish—it helps me communicate better and feel more connected to my surroundings. And of course, trying traditional food is an unmissable part of the whole adventure!
When it comes to working with our team, Danijela added:
My experience with the Center has been nothing but positive. From the start, the team has been professional, kind, and ready to answer all my questions. The application process and preparation for the exchange were clearly explained, and their support made everything so much easier.
Her message to future applicants:
To anyone thinking about applying—go for it! This is an amazing chance for personal growth, getting to know a new culture, and creating unforgettable memories. Living abroad makes you more independent, open-minded, and helps you pick up the language. If you enjoy working with kids and are up for an exciting adventure, you’re going to love it!
