Tasting Local Flavors, Learning the Language, and Soaking Up the Sun in Spain

Our cultural exchange participant, Vanja, returned a month ago from Campoamor, a small beach town in the municipality of Orihuela, part of the Valencian autonomous region. She spent one unforgettable month there—here’s what she shared about her experience.

Campoamor is a quiet little town that mostly sleeps through the year, only coming alive during the summer months. People from Murcia and other nearby cities flock there for the season. Since it’s right on the coast, most free time is spent either out on the water or relaxing on the beach.

The family that hosted me made a genuine effort to treat me like one of their own. The kids taught me Spanish, and in return, I helped them with English.

I spent my free time exploring nearby towns, tasting local specialties, practicing the language, and of course—enjoying the beach life.

What I loved most about this experience was meeting new people, getting to know different customs, and having the freedom to visit places and try things that I probably wouldn’t have been able to fit into a shorter trip.

A cultural exchange is truly something not to miss. It’s the perfect way to learn a language, get immersed in a culture, and spend meaningful time in a country you’ve always wanted to visit.
